Jeff,
I'd give re-tapping a try before going onto the helicoil. If you are going
to continue doing work on the car, you will need to pick up a tap and die
set. As a set you can get them pretty reasonably, and then buy add'l sizes
as needed. They are very easy to use, just like turning a bolt. I use them a
lot just to clean up threads on stuff that must be re-used (captive nuts,
bolts that are not being replaced, etc).
If that fails, then you can always go to the helicoil. This will involved
drilling out the hole to be larger, and fitting the helicoil into the hole
to basically become the new thread. Much more work that just trying to run a
tap first.
