Patrick,
Since your engine is the later 1296, it surely has the same markings as
the 1500 (please tell me I'm right)!  Therefore, each point is 4 degrees
from the previous point.  The recesses represent 2 degree increments to
the next point.

With that said, the know on the distributor is the vernier adjuster that
was (at least so I thought) replaced when the Large Bearing version of
the 1296 came out.  Most likely the distributor was left over from the
original 1147 engine of the Mk1.  Yes they do work.  I have one on my
1500 engine.  At any rate, each click of the vernier adjuster increases
or decreases timing by 1 degree.
