Your best option is, while you are at it! The faital words buy yourself an
'O' ring kit and gasket kit for the overdrive and gearbox. Split the
overdrive, wash out the gearbox and overdrive with paraffin (kerosine?),
mmmm it smells nice!
Throw away all the cloths that you did the work in.
Remove the three pin srew things at the bottom of the sump, and clean
inside.
Now inspect the gearbox, and overdrive, does it warent taking apart firther.
Hopefuly it wont. On the other hand you may want to replace the lay shaft,
needel bearings, 3 main bearings, syncros etc.
The seals and 'O' rings cost me about 20 pounds. From Overdrive Spairs,
somewhere in the midlands, unfortunatly I forgot to get there address off of
manor garage who I got them through, and can't find there details. Anyway
these people are the supplyers to all the big part's people and so you pay
much less getting parts direct from them. Anyone in the UK got any more
info on this place?
Anyway replace all your 'O' rings, your copper washers, and gaskets. I used
one of these non setting joining compounds on the gaskets. Holmar Blue,
I've now started using Somthing Red which is based on Meths instead of
celulose so not as bad for you!
It took me about a week of work to do, but I was out of work at the time, so
I was board and took extra long to do the work. Also I only had half of a
complete gearbox with the rest in my car which was being used, and I had to
be shure that after tranfiring it accross, it would work.
I forgot to tighten somthing, the solonoid to be precice, and so pressure
drained the sump of the overdrive, leaving very little oil and no OD.
Retightening and more oil did the trick.
Sorry it's abit rambley.
