Hi Donald,
I'm wondering what kind of car you're describing? Do you have the
steering
wheel and column in place now? what holds it in if you're looking for this
thingy?
If you expect a U shaped bolt clamp, how do you get he washers and nuts
on the
top end, hidden under the dash?
If you're assembling a box of parts into a car, and have one of the U clamps, I
expect
it comes from the steering rack mounts, down by the radiator on the front
crossmember.
In that case you should have 2 of them!
On MK IVs and 1500, the steering column mount thingy looks more like this:
Bottom half of the steering column mount: A cast aluminum "U",
very thick
metal, say 3/4" wide. It has two bolt holes through it, up through which go
two cap
screws (the allen key type) with domed heads. Theys screws screw into a
floating steel
piece above the steering column mount hidden behind the dash.
Inside the U shaped thingy is a shallow channel, about 5/8' wide, into
which
went a felt strip to protect the steering column. I replaced mine with leather.
The U shaped thingy also has a smaller U shaped depression in it, into which
fitted the
steel semi circular tube that protected the wires from the column switches.
Upper half of mount: Also thick aluminum casting, semicircular notch in it to
fit the
steering column, also with shallow groove for felt. The two cap screws
mentioned above
also go up through this aluminum block before meeting the steel captive bit
under the
dash.
no rubber anywhere!
Hope this helps with the technical game of 40 questions.
Cheers, Fred
