update:
i bought the alternator last night (GM style), and when i got
home to try it up to the engine, it wouldn't go. on the lucas
unit, the mounting tabs on the alternator are offset, and on the
GM they are opposite each other. so, the adjusting bracket on
the top wouldn't reach the mounting tab on the alternator. easy
fix, i made an extension to bolt to the alternator that would
reach to the mounting bracket, and it mounted right in place.
tonight i am going to buy a longer belt. the electrical
connectors are the next to sort out. i have to install a ring
terminal onto the charging lead, and plug the other two
connectors onto the alternator. looks like i'll be driving her
around tonight!
