Laura,
I made a side filter for the 40 DCOE 17 that I had on Huxley before I
changed to the twin SU's.  I found a suitable FRAM round air filter and
reshaped it into an elongated oval and cut out two pieces of sheet
aluminum to sandwich it between.  One piece had cutouts for the carb
holes and the other was flat and two bolts kept them together. 
Clearance was no problem and the velocity stacks fit between the
plates.  Worked fine.  I only wish I could say the same for a single
DCOE on a Spitfire engine!
