Hi Pat,
Look at the descriptions of the check valves on the oil filter study
website. Most are just nitrile rubber flaps.
Seems to me that on the Ford V8s the check valves are redundant since the
filter is 'threads up'. On the Spitfire the filter is 'threads down' and
the oil would drain out without the valve.
I'm at a loss to say why you would ever have an empty filter with the Ford
at an oil change. I've certainly never had that on my Mustang 5.0.
