Greg,

I can't speak specifically for the 6 cyl. engines, but reduction gear
starters (a la the finer Japanese brands) are available to replace the
Lucas starters on Lotus cars, from RD Enterprises, in Quakertown PA.
Pricey, as I recall. Email me off-list if you want the contact info (hey, I
don't make no commission etc.)

There are a lot of things to check first: connections, grounds, etc.   Have
you had the existing starter tested at an auto electric shop?
