Gas Tank

I have something loose in my gas tank and I think it's the float.  How do I
take the circular float plug out of the side of the gas tank?  (1500).  It
looks as if there are three indentations on the plug and three
corrosponding grooves on the outside tank.  How do you twist the inner plug
to line up with the tank??
