A very interesting take on the global warming theme is found in Michael
Chrichton's "State of Fear". The protagonist is a tree-hugger attorney who has
his notions of global warming totally shattered by the facts. The work is
thoroughly researched and offers a counter to what we are exposed to everyday
in the media.

Thanks, Jon, but I'm not worried about August (or February) snow here in San
Diego.

our February.
Obviously the article is still claiming *excessive* cold, and I'm not
arguing that. Just wanted to state the obvious when I read the "In
August!" comment.
By the way, the global warming theory doesn't say that all spots on the
earth heat up the same amount, or that all spots even heat up at all.
Global warming will cause heat in some places (say, the mid-atlantic),
that causes a shift in ocean currents, and hence air currents, causing
the warm air that normally keeps say, S. Africa, warmer in August
(winter) to move somewhere else.
Saying that S. Africa is having a cold winter doesn't necessarily go
against global warming, it actually may back it up. Gore actually
mentions a similar phenomenon in the movie.

Jon Heese
