Bummer!!!  I've had a test bench variable power supply from
Radio Shack for over 20 yrs, maybe longer.  It's fantastic, and
wasn't that expensive when I purchased it.  I also have a 12VDC
at 6 to 10 amp supply kit that I built back in the 70s to power
my 2 meter radios.  Put it in a case, with a switchable meter to
show volts and amps.

I use both of these quite a bit.

I did do a search for variable power supplies, and found some 
nice ones.  Some aren't very expensive.
