As others have said, I turn the power to the compressor off when I'm done.
That way, if something should fail when I'm not home, I don't also have to
pay to run the compressor continuously until I do get home.

When all was healthy, that meant my main hose (which is tapped directly into
the tank, no quick connect) stayed pressurized all the time.  Now I've got a
fairly significant leak, so the tank bleeds down quickly.

Hoses don't last me very long, but I haven't attributed any failures to how
long they are pressurized.  I think living near Los Angeles has more to do
with it.  Normally the outer jacket starts showing weather cracking long
before the hose actually fails, and generally when they do fail, it's right
at the termination (where it gets the most bending from use).  Latest hose
is a Goodyear that is starting to deteriorate after maybe 4 years of
service.  The outer jacket still looks OK, but the innermost layer is
starting to rot & the fitting pulled out of the end the other day.
