I'm not a metalurgist and I can't really contribute to the discussion on
the grit.  My dad has a couple of belt sanders and I think we just use
"course", "medium", and "fine".

But one thing I'd like to point out, SAFETY.  Becareful if you are cutting
on steel and aluminum.  A while back someone (I think John Niolon) posted an
item about a fellow that got badly burned when his grinding dust became
thermite and ignited!!!!!  So be sure you clean off you work areas of any
old sanding dust before you start to sand on something else.
