Nope - never heard of any around here. Oil Express shops all have pits in
this area. I've never seen any ventilators there, and they invite customers
down into the pit to watch - they even have signs to that effect and a wide
stairway to make it easy. A gas station in our town (Chicago suburbs) has 3
connected pits - in operation since the station was built in the 1930's.
They have no ventilation other than what breezes blow in when the doors are
open. The fire chief looks really hard to find something to ding businesses
when he does the fire inspections, but he's never made the gas station do
anything with the pits.

That said, the Building Dept. is hedging on giving me a permit to install a
pit in my garage at home. The big problems from their standpoint are fall
hazards and keeping automotive liquids out of the sewer system. If they'd
give me a permit, they've already said that they'd require some sort of fan
to blow fresh air down there, haven't said much else about ventilation.
Then again, this is a real Yuppie haven, and nobody is supposed to be so
undignified as to work on their own car. That makes it lots more enjoyable
to jack up a car in the driveway, get out the flame wrench, and bang away !!
