My folks HE furnace had about the same problem.
After taking a look at it, the drain for accumulated moisture had clogged up,
filling something up, (can't really remember the exact circumstances).
I just played around with the furnace and found the pressure switch, did the
same blow/suck on it routine and it worked.
Cleaned the drain out and it worked better, still needed a new pressure switch
though (or was the blower motor also cracked, I can't really remember).
So those of you with HE furnaces, check your drains.
Symptoms were exhaust blower starting up, ignition starting to light and then
cutting off, to keep repeating.
It was an intermittent failure, and the furnace would eventually fire up, my
folks wouldn't have caught it for a while until the furnace completely died,
except I was staying in the basement while at home and the furnace trying to
start and stopping was keeping me awake, so I started farting with it in the
middle of the night.
Also I would keep an extra ignition around for these things, we've had one go
bad. You can clean them up and probably get the furnace running again for a
little while, but when they start to go, they need to be replaced (my dad
cleaned his the first time and then ended up installing a new one a little
while later).
I've become a big fan of keeping spares (ignition, blower motor, pressure
switch, anyone know of anything else?) around for this critical device, they
only fail when you really need them and then you can't get parts/service
quickly.
