Doug, I don't think that's a 'fair' reply. There are a lot of things
that the race car owner can do himself. Building a roll cage is not out
of that realm.
If Paul wants to get educated, buy (rent or borrow) the proper tools and
bend his own tubing, that works. I know many race car owners/drivers
that have built their own cage. In fact, SCCA is very specific about
materials and specifications. That's a good place to start. In
addition, SCCA or any sanctioning body will inspect the cage to assure
it meets their eligibly requirements.
