It depends. At one time it denoted the number of grit particles that would
fit in a certain area, but things have evolved. There are different
standards for the grit sizes. The two most common here in the US are CAMI
numbers that are generally used on dry-sanding papers, and the FEPA "P"
designations that are generally used on wet-sanding papers.
