sandpaper grades

I've got a dumb question .  Surely someone can explain to me what the
grades of sandpaper stand for ??  When I look at "80 grit" paper.. what
does the 80 signify ??  And when I can barely feel the abrasive on 2000
grit, what are they counting that comes up to 2000 ???
