Going in my memory back to about 1971, as I recall a muncie m21 had a

could generally be identified by a 21 spline ( much finer) output shaft.

No, it's just considered being married with children.
About the Muncie trannies, I've been semi-following a thread about the M22
on a newsgroup, seems the M22 (last tranny offered by Muncie in the family),
has straight cut gears, which make it the stonger of the M20 or M21.
It's also supposed to be a bit noisier as well.
I still think that if you had an M20 or M21 you'd be okay too, I have an
M20 I took out of a late '60's El Camino that came with a 283, other than a
bad input shaft bearing, everything else looks good, it was subject to abuse
as well, the kid i got it from had put in a more potent 327.
As I recall the Saginaw's were the standard for 4 and 6cyl motor of the
60's and '70's, i never ran one, but did hear they were aweak link when
coupled to a V8.
