When I repaired mine on my first '57 about 20 years ago, I cut back the sheath that had been mangled by the carburetor bracket about an inch. Then I pulled the inner wire out and cut it off flush with the end of the rod shaft. I drilled out the old wire with a 1/16" bit in a 1/4" drill, superglued the new wire in and cut it to length.
