I also learned a lot about jacks and jacking points on the car from the many
replies.
In the summer when I drive the Morgan I just use a good high quality oil and
usually run something like 15W50. Some people swear by the synthetic oils
and I believe these should also work well. I do use a synthetic 90W in the
trani since I think it shifts better (especially when it is still cold).
However I do not use synthetic in rear ends. I really don't know why other
than I have been warned against it, so I just play it on the safe side.
I usually use the highest octane I can buy and I use an additive. People
have made fun of my additive on this list before, so at the risk of further
ridicule I will say that I use about 4 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil per 10
gallons of gas. There really is no mystery here, it is just a light weight
oil that mixes with the gas and helps to lube the valves and upper cylinder.
If people want to pay $10 a quart for the additives go ahead, but I believe
Marvel Mystery oil is the same stuff and a lot cheaper. I learned this from
an old friend who had an excellent MGTF 1500 and his car always ran great
and I have been using the stuff for years. Worst case I don't think it is
doing any harm and best case it is helping to prolong the engine life
between valve jobs.
The bolts are mostly standard English with some exceptions. I have
discovered that those on the Moss trani are Whitworth. So it is good to have
a set of those spanners just for the odd bolt here and there.
I wouldn't use a rubber mallet since I don't think you would be able to get
the knock offs tight enough. I use one with copper on one side and rolled up
rawhide on the other. I find that I can get the knock offs tight enough with
the raw hide side and not do any damage to the chrome. However I do pound
the p out of the knock off since I would rather have a few dings in it than
have it fall off.
You can get a manual from Morgan Spares or the other Morgan suppliers that
covers the +4. You might also want to pick up a TR4 manual to get more
detail on the engine.
