The factory V8 does indeed have the temp gauge and fan sensors in the inlet
manifold. However the cooling fans (on all MGBs) are overridden by the
ignition, and so are not running when the ignition is off. This does give
rise to 'heat soak' and an increase in temp gauge reading until the whole
thing cools down, but that isn't a problem. I'd rather have that than the
fans running when unattended, possibly long duration hence flattening the
battery. In recent years there have been cases of modern cars wired that
way catching fire because the fan seized but was still powered, and with one
of them being parked in a garage at the time it burnt the owners house down!
