Hi John,
1. I believe I would buy a new pair, then have them arched or
de-arched to suit. WIth this old "pair", you don't know if it really
is, or was, a pair.
2. Those springs just push in and twist, either right or left. Some
use a brake tool for the job but I've found needle-nose pliers to work
best and ordinary pliers will work OK.
3. TD's distributor is a gear-drive, so it can fit in at many
positions. What I would do is to turn engine with the crank until
cylinder #1 is at firing TDC, lift off the top of the distributor and see
where the rotor has parked. Then you can determine if it's easiest to
move wires around the cap so you can set it as shown in the driver
handbook, or if you have to lift the distributor out and try to move
things one tooth at a time.
4. If you buy new, you get new. If you buy old, you might want to
have it checked for cracks w magnaflux or some other method. New should
have the wearing surfaces un-worn, and the old could be worn from lack of
grease.
