This is simple. Say you want to turn the distributor 90 degrees clockwise,
in order for both clips to be clear. Just loosen the clamp and do so, then
pop each spark plug lead off the cap (one-at-a-time is recommended to avoid
confusion) and move it to the next position counterclockwise -- the opposite
direction that you rotated the distributor. Need I mention that you want to
rotate the distributor in 90 degree increments only? (on a 6-banger you
could use 60 degree increments).
As a check that you are doing this correctly, before you begin, remove the
cap and note the position of the rotor. Let's assume it is pointing towards
the radiator, and that the nearest lead is that for the #1 cylinder. After
rotating the distributor housing, the rotor will still be pointing the same
direction; and if you have replaced the plug wires as I described, it will
still be pointing to the #1 lead.
Unless you were precisely measuring degrees of rotation, you will probably
want to set the timing again at this point. But unless you have a terrible
eye for angles, you should be within a few degrees of where you were
originally -- certainly runnable, at any rate.
