Mmm...Seems like the lathe you used to smooth out the weld would have worked
to remove the excess by the threads too?

The problem with cutting off the top and rethreading is that the lever taper
gets thicker pretty quickly as you take off the top. Then it's too big for
the
die, and you would have to have some way to remove the excess stock before you
could thread it.
