I think the thing that broke the alternator attaching point on the water pump was just the 30 seconds of vibrating caused by the rapid deterioration of the belt just prior to it braking. I had replaced the alternator several months ago in this car and know that the attaching point was fine at that time. I drive my MGs approx.18,000 miles annually, so several months = a few thousand miles, on my 75 B.
