Mark,
If you have been thinking of this for 17 years, you've probably thought of
most of the  solutions.  I have seen CD's mounted behind the blanking plate
on the passenger side and the blanking plate modified with a spring along
the bottom so one can pull it down for access to the unit, otherwise the
unit is always hidden.
I have considered this, but like others have said, I can't hear it at speed
anyway.
Of course, this all assumes that you convert to neg ground, which, IMHO, is
the sensible thing to do.
