Adding to what Charles has already said they can be set hot to .013in or
cold to .015in.  Personally I use cold because the temperature isn't going
to alter while you are adjusting them unlike hot, and I use two feelers -
.014 and .016.  When the .014 is loose and the .016 is stiff you know you
have it about right.  Note that the rocker pads that ride on the tops of the
valve
stems can wear, and the resulting groove is narrower than the usual feeler
gauge so you can end up with a clearance greater than expected.  A clearance
greater than it should be isn't harmful - just noisy - but a clearance
*less* than it should be can cause burnt valves and seats particularly on
the exhaust.  I have recently discovered on some valves that if I set the
clearance on the exact 'rule of nine' point there can be an even bigger
clearance a little way before or after that point.
