Ah yes, a recurring question... Let me take this one...
The hole is to let the oil and rain water, whatever gets into the bell
housing, out. The rather large cotter pin is there loosely, to prevent
anything settling there and gumming up the hole. So as you drive around, it
vibrates and moves about and keeps the hole clean.
What an engineering marvel! They knew the rear seal would leak, so they not
only made a place for the oil to go, but a self-cleaning oil hole at that!
