Hi David
The pin is there to prevent the hole getting blocked up with the oily clutch
dust. The oil WILL leak from the gearbox front seal and or the rear main
seal on the engine.
As one wit on this list signs his emails with the following, it should tell
you something.
"my car is not leaking oil, it is just marking it's territory"
My B engine on the other hand is not leaking oil at the moment, but then
again it does not have any oil in it!

Subject: Clutch Bell Housing Question
Just got done pulling the engine and trans as one unit from my 74 MG Midget.
When I pulled the engine, I noticed a small hole at the base of the clutch
bell housing. There apprears to be a cotter pin hanging out of the hole.
It doesnt seem to be holding anything and moves freely.
Is this an indication of something broke??? I have been looking through the
books I have and I cant see anything that would explain it.
Any thoughts. Help for this new MG owner/restorer would be appreciated.
