There are two metal snap tabs that are keeping that thing from popping out.
One on top and the other on the bottom. The tab is a bent piece of metal
that compresses as you push the switch in and then expands behind the dash.
These things are a real pain in the ass. When you try to pull the unit out
sometimes the tab catches on the dash and instead of compressing against the
switch, gets bent out or is jammed against the dash. You can try squeezing
it flat but it's tight in there. If you have a late model b your speedo
comes out with a turn and might offer some more access. I usually push down
from behind the dash and pry up with a screwdriver or hand on the outside to
get one of the tabs clear of the dash. Then pry the other way to get it out.
Keep in mind these things get brittle after 25 years. You can remove the
switch cover by prying jently or even just grabing the switch with your
fingers and pulling to the side. Once you get it all appart you can clean it
with some contact cleaner. I usually coat the sliding mechanism with some
vasaline. Good luck

Hans,

I don't want to get rid of the switch, just get it out to fix or replace.
Haven't been able to get at it to remove it. It's pretty tight where it's
located and I wondered if the springy wire that I feel from the bottom of
the switch is related to getting it out. I have replaced my headlight
switch and that one I got out with a screw driver and lots of contortions
and not a small amount of blood. The metal bracing that holds the radio
console in place is really in the way to see or feel much.
