Michael,
I have to admit it has been probably 20 years since I did that clutch job
and had to remove the shifter. To be honest with you I can't recall any
retaining keys (maybe because I had so much trouble with the retaining plate
and spring everything else was forgotten). I'll look at the manual and see
what's what and get back to you

Subject: MGA Shift Lever(Part II)
Thanks, Barney and Mike. I had no trouble removing the retaining ring,
retention spring and cover. The interior is mostly out of the car anyway,
so I had also already removed the carpet and cover. I have found that the
shift lever doesn't pull straight out as you stated. It was at this point
that I queried the list for help. The shift lever has two grooves along
each side and it appears that there are retaining keys in the slots. Is
this so? The lever seems to move upwars about 3/8ths of an inch, but no
farther. Any ideas or should I just use grunt force?
Thanks,
Michael Ohleger
