This may not answer your question, but I will share my
experiences. Last year I solved a whole list of
problems when I rebuilt the engine on my '77 B with
125K. However the one problem not solved was that
darned tick, tick, tick, from one single valve. No, I
did not replace the camshaft because it looked just
fine. I did find a crack in a single lifter which I
felt sure was the culprit, but replacing it, the
related push rod and all the usual suspects (having
missed the big bed, I stopped at the clutch) did not
help with that issue.
Other than not solving the click and clacking, the
rebuild went better and was less expensive than I had
anticipated.
Did I err in not replacing the camshaft? Could our
problem be somewhere else? By the way, mine has not
been seen by trustworthy MG mechanics, but I do think
I got the tappet clearance correct under my trusty
shade tree.
