Hi,
I just bought a used running engine '70 MGB engine for my '77B.
The new engine seems to be in good working order, ~160 psi compression
in all four cylinders and 75psi of oil pressure at a fast idle.
I expect some problems putting it into my '77, but what should I be
expecting.
1. Engine mounts will be different. I don't expect this to be a problem.
Either I just swap mounts, or I will need to change front mounting plates.
2. Is there a difference in the tranny bell housing set up?? Again
swap rear mounting plates. What about the clutch to flywheel??
I suppose I should replace the clutch on my tranny as well as having
the flywheel on the new engine skimmed.
3. I know the distributor is different. Which one should I be using?? The
'77's electronic one, or the '70 points one or...
4. SUs or ZS carbs. At least initially I need to (I believe) put the ZS carbs
on to pass the Virginia visual as well a tail pipe smog test. Since I have
all of the equipment off my old engine this should not be a problem.
I am guessing that I will need a water jacket to autochoke port put into
the head though. I have all of the proper exhaust/intake manifolds.
5. Will I have a problem mating my starter up to the motor??
6. The 70 engine has a fan on the water pump. The 77 has
thermally actuated fans on the radiator. Does it matter??
7. What about the oil cooler??
I'm sure there is more to think about. What did I miss.
