<<He's going to make a few calls to find a shop with a serious hydraulic
press cause he's afraid to go any higher. (His shop is small and the
axle half shaft probably would carom around the place three times if it
ever came out...)
Bill Spohn - didn't you say your hubs came off with about 6 tons of
pressure? >>
Yep, but the really recalcitrant ones can exceed 14 tons, which as you found
out, requires more than the hydraulic jack style of press. Take it to a
machine shop that deals with heavy duty truck stuff, and don't be tempted to
hang around to watch.
The heating can help, but make sure that the guy doing it knows enough not to
be giving you back retempered axles. I have seen some fools with torches (more
is better, right)? heating stuff until it glows and then quenching it in
water. Baaaad!!
Oh yeah - make sure that they press the same side hub on the original axle. I
have been told that with 40 years of force mostly in one direction, the axles
can take a "set" and reversing that direction by swapping the other handed hub
on can be detrimental to it's longevity. I have no idea if this is true, but
it sounds good, and why take chances?
