My understanding is that it has more to do with keeping the matching
wear patterns on the inboard splines of the axle shafts and the spider
gears. Anyone else??

can take a "set" and reversing that direction by swapping the other
handed hub
on can be detrimental to it's longevity. I have no idea if this is true,
