Thanks for the excellent advice. I probably DID torque the cover down too
hard!
I've pulled the alternator and am going to have it tested tomorrow. Zero
voltage coming from the old thing while the car's running. I know a good
repair guy who probably has brushes available. I was sort of expecting the
alt to go bad, so this is an expected repair.
