To add to the valve cover replies -
I use the standard cork gasket. I make sure the surfaces are clean and
smooth on the head, and clean on the valve cover. Then I put a very thin
layer of gasket sealer on the top and bottom surfaces of the gasket - I use
the pliable silicone gasket sealer.

The gasket should fit on the cover, between the clips (or whatever they are
called). Squeeze it in. It should fit snug so that the gasket does not fall
out when you install the cover.

As mentioned, tighten with minimal torque - 4-8 lbs.

I usually like to let the car sit overnight to insure the gasket sealer
sets up. The silicone gasket sealer is like rubber when it sets up.

I can remove the cover and reuse the gasket several times, just wiping the
surface clean. I usually adjust my valves twice a year (or 6000 miles if
the car gets a lot of miles) and I replace the gasket about once a year.
