A good shop manual will have a pic the assembled rear brake pieces.  That's
one way to check that you've put it all back together correctly.  Maybe a
better way is to only do one side at a time so you always have the other to
check against.

Assuming it's all been assembled properly, the only things that should
prevent you from sliding the drum back on is a)the pistons aren't squashed
back into their bores, b)the adjuster hasn't been backed off enough, or
c)the handbrake is set.  It could take a little wrangling to get the shoes
aligned in a position where the drum will slide on.

If the handbrake lever/bar thingy really is the problem, it's just not been
assembled properly.  If the brake assembly came apart, the pieces can
somehow be put back together.

Umm...how do you mean?  It's true the lever and bar aren't actually bolted
down to anything, but they should be riveted to each other and held in place
by the shoes.
