Sure, most tire mounters are retired rocket scientists...
When I had my wheels re-balanced at 3-day, I drove away to the sound of
thumpa-thumpa-thumpa. When I checked it, I found they had put SIXTY
ounces of lead on one edge of a wheel, covering the entire half the rim.
A closer inspection revealed that the tread had split wide open and the
steel belt was visible.
When I wrote corporate headquarters I reamed them not only for not
refunding my money, but also for the colossal stupidity in not questioning
what might be wrong to require that much weight. I also pointed out their
multi-million dollar deep-pocket liability in letting a customer drive
away with a tire in that condition. I kind of hoped they would offer me
a free set of tires (I hadn't purchased the worthless made-in-Ireland
Semperits there), but they did refund my money.
