underside of hood

I repainted the b and gave the undersides of the trunk
and hood lids a shot.  I have taken that fussy pading stuff off
the underside of the hood.  My question is can I get
away with not puting it back on?  It looks
so nice under there now and I sure don't want
to put that torn stuff back on.  Is this stuff just for sound
proofing or heat also?  
If I leave it off my hood it won't get so hot it will do bad 
things to my new paint will it?
