The ignition warning lamp has to be 12 volt. That's because of the way
it is designed to operate.
A lamp glows because of the potential difference between the input wire
and ground. If the difference is 12 volt it glows brigthly. If the
difference is around 6 v it glows dimly. If there is no difference,
then the lamp doesn't even light.
Power is fed to center lead from the dynamo and power is fed to the
holder from the battery. If the dynamo is putting out 6 volt and the
battery 12v the lamp will dimly glow. The greater the difference
between the dynamo voltage and battery voltage the brighter the lamp.
