Gary, Dale:
I think Gary was particularly interested in an instrument that would
automatically scan the output of several thermocouples.

I was waiting for others to reply, since many on the list seem to know more
than I do about automotive instrumentation. Since nobody has come up with
anything that really seems to answer the original question, here's my 2c:

You can easily find industrial "panel meters" that will automatically scan
TCs-- seven or 8 channels seems typical--and I've found the cost range to be
$595 - $1350. Omega has several kinds.

The hang-up is that all the ones I have info on require ac power. Another
potential problem is that the digital readouts probably aren't optimized for
outdoor use (certainly no "head-up display").

A good geek should be able to build you one-- 12v, with a readout that would
work in sunlight. But you'd need a geek who understands the special
circuitry requirements of TCs; I have seen many screw-ups of TC circuitry
by otherwise-competent electronics techs.

I know also that some automotive OEMs have included data scanning in the
original instrument clusters; maybe you could make one of those work.

I agree with you that it could be valuable to have this kind of info "in
your face" during a run. (Unlike some others on the list) I think the
rider/driver really can accurately process and use the data, if he can get
the "input".

Gary, I've been using a nice hand-held unit, digital display that can use up
to 4 thermocouples, from Omega.com. They've got a wide variety of units that
may suit your needs. Good service also,

Does a scanning pyrometer exist? I would appreciate the capability of having
real time EGT information during a run. Why scan? Since I can barely read
the mile markers when I pass them having a multi-line display of appropriate
size for my eyes would fill up the windshield. Hence a one line display with
3/4" or so digits. Clock to the next cylinder 1-2 second rate. Any thoughts?
