To add to Gribs account, I typically measure oil tem at the supply to the
engine, (sump or tank) but water temp out of the engine. (water out). I
think it is just preference and/or what you are used to. With data
acquisition as common as it is these days, I would choose to look at oil in
and out of the engine. There is something to be learned with the difference
in oil temps and pressures.
Last year, when I was trying to optimize the N/A motor, I discussed using an
ultra light oil, with one of my engineer friends at Roush, knowing that
Winston Cup typically use very light and very hot oil along with less
pressure (smaller clearances?????) for qualifying engines. My friend was
not real specific, but the type of increases I was guessing at did not seem
worthwhile for me to venture into the unknown, so I continue to use Mobil 1
15w50 but heated to around 180 deg f prior to a pass. Water typically at
180 deg f as well.
Of course the Roush teams don't typically qualify too well, so maybe I'm
getting my info from the wrong place. Come to think of it they haven't been
performing too well this year....
