My T'Bird has a oil temp gauge which I use religiously and all NASCAR cars
run one also. Basically, I want 180 plus oil temp before any run and maybe
140 water (engine) temp. After the long course runs at B'Vile, my water temp
was around 200 and the oil was 190. I have no openings in the front of the
car and I didn't use the fan. I use 10 wt. engine oil but for qualifying
some guys use 0 wt. Since we have a drysump system, the oil is stored in a 4
gallon tank behind the drivers seat which has 110volt heater bands to
preheat the oil.
During a NASCAR race the temp of the oil and water get close to the same,
around 225 Deg.F. maximum. Depending on the engine and/or the engine
builder, select or desired running temperatures are maintained. Some engines
cannot take extreme (over 240) temperatures, even for short periods of time.
If you listen to the radio chatter at a NASCAR race, you'll hear them talk
about oil temp all the time.
