for emmesion reasons the manufactures are begining to allow for cam and
Crank torsional twist and that why more and more are using individual cyl
timing. at full load I hav read that the rear cyl on a BBC can be up to 4
degs. off. probably is the reason why the front cyl. is the one you time.

Grib, that's a very sophisticated distributor, if you can adjust the
timing of each cylinder.  I imagine the operator would have to be
certain there was no "cam walk" fore and aft that would make all the
timings vary a little and maybe differently at various rpms.

Ardun fellas don't have to worry about cam walk because the cam is
driven by bevel gears so (if you use the early gearset) the cam is
always loaded backwards slightly against the block thrust face so it
stays in one place.  So the timing of the Vertex mag or distributor has
no reason to walk.

The Crane distributor you describe makes me think about what they said
about the Hilborn mechanical injector when it appeared about 50 years
ago, with one throttle body for each cylinder:  "We have gotten to the
point now where each cylinder can be made to give its best rather than
some not doing much in a typical carburetor and manifold situation due
to being over-rich or over-lean, or just in a place where they don't get
their full share of air/fuel mixture."

I imagine the Crane could be adjusted cylinder by cylinder on the dyno
until the best total results were obtained.  I personally wouldn't want
to do it up next to the engine running at full power!!

Clem TeBow of C.T. Automotive, in his BRN Interview, told how he leaned
over his Bonneville Ardun on the dyno to adjust the fuel mixture on his
homemade mechanical injector 50 years ago, while it ran at full power
around 5000 revs.  That must have been quite an experience.
