To a realy great extent I agree with you, but I
think electronics do provide more horsepower. I
don't think a vintage only technology, say a '69
302 Chev Z-28, solid lifters with 2 fours can
compete with the same size (bore & stroke) motor
which is set up with a digitally controlled,
electronic ignition, digitally controlled timing
advance, and electronic fuel injection. For me, I
have always rooted for the under dog, and I would
like to be the guy to run a vintage setup that
blows some high-tecky away - -but in reality, I
know the chances are little to nill of that ever
happening. I personally have no heartburn running
them in the same class. 302 naturally aspirated
gas inches is a rose is a rose is a rose etc.,.
But I think what some guys fear is that without a
hope of ever setting a record in class, the day
will soon come when nobody will build old hemis,
use carburetors, or run 409s, 427s, 390s, and all
those great old powerplants of yesteryear will
disappear forever.
