Michael,
I had my Service Parts List open when I saw your rant. This is information
it has about when the dust covers were added. Part numbers are BTC204 and
BTC205.
Com. (C) 9450 BN7 Disk Wheels, 9453 BN7 Wire Wheels, 9088 BT7 Disc Wheels,
9090 BT7 Wire Wheels.
It is safe to say 1000's of AH 3000 were made with disk brakes and without
the dust covers. For the earlier cars BMC offer an optional kit to retrofit.
I trust this helps to put your mind at ease.
Harold

Michael,
They absolutely are NOT essential. I've got 81000+ miles on my 1959 BT7 that
do not have the dust shield backing plates installed.

If you guys don't mind, here's today's rant. I have struggling with fitting
the backplates dust shields to my BN2 disc brake conversion. These
backplates would have to be fitted before the extended splined hub is
assembled on the car. I tried every way I thought they should be put on the
car, but could not get the mounting tabs to line up with the caliper plate
bolts. Not even close. I'm ready to finish the front hubs and disc brakes
without the backplates. Is there any of you guys running conversions or
standard disc brakes without these things? Do I absolutely have to put
these things on the car? Ok, that's the rant for this week.
