I've had many such occasions, but one sticks in my mind. It's a visual,
you-had-to-be-there
kind of thing, but it really touched me.
I was turning onto McKeon road to start one of my favorite local drives
through the
Almaden Valley. As I rounded the corner, I spotted a young mother with
a little boy
at a bus stop. The little boy--who was probably 3 or 4 years old--was
busy doing
little boy things. When he either saw or heard my BJ8 he turned toward
me, stood
up straight and still, and pointed like he'd just seen Santa Claus. His
gaze and outstretched
arm and finger followed me down the street and around the corner. I
should've given
them a rev or a blast on the horn, but just cruised by, grinning. The
mother seemed to
really get a kick out of it, too.
