Actually, DMH was not quite correct on that, the Roman Emperors routinely
produced busts of themselves in mass while still alive, and put their faces
on coins as a way to legitimize their leadership position over Rome, and
particularly the Senate. Considering that Western Civilization is simply an
evolution of the Roman Empire (I personally routinely argue that Rome never
died, it's still here in a slightly different form), DMH's problem with the
bust was specifically an local English cultural view of when to create a
bust.
People used to say the same thing about US Navy warships (i.e. you name
them only after dead people) but that changed when the USS Ronald Reagan was
commissioned. Of course you could argue that in his Alzheimer's state, he
was already gone...
